Within 2 miles of Estero Town Commons is Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Opening in 1997 as the youngest 4 year university in the U.S., FGCU now employs nearly 1,000 people. The enrollment for the fall 2010 semester was 12,000 and the current campus is expected to reach build-out in the next 7-8 years at 20,000 – 22,000 students.
